Failed Your Ohio Knowledge Test? Here's What to Do Next

Failing the Ohio temps test isn't the end of the world. Here's exactly how long you have to wait, what it costs to retake, and what to study before you go back.

Failing the Ohio knowledge test is more common than you'd think — and it's completely recoverable. Most people who fail pass on the second attempt once they know which section gave them trouble. Here's exactly what happens next.

How the test is scored

The Ohio knowledge test is split into two 20-question sections: road signs and Ohio law / safe driving practices. You need 75% (15 out of 20) on each section. If you fail only one section, you only retake that section. If you fail both, you retake both.

Can I retake it the same day?

No. Ohio requires you to wait at least 24 hours before retaking either section of the knowledge test. Most BMV locations recommend coming back a different day so the staff can re-pull your file.

What does a retake cost?

  • Knowledge test retake (either section): $24.
  • You don't need to repay the original $23.50 if you're just retaking one section.
  • You don't need to retake the vision test if you already passed it.

The fastest way to actually pass next time

Figure out which section you missed — the BMV will tell you the breakdown. Then spend 30 minutes drilling exactly that topic with practice questions. If it was the road signs section, walk around your neighborhood and identify every sign out loud. If it was the law/safe driving section, focus on the topics most people miss: BAC limits, school bus stop arm rules, and Ohio's Move Over Law.

How many times can I fail before something bad happens?

There's no hard cap, but Ohio BMV practice is that after about four failed attempts a manager usually steps in to recommend additional studying or another formal driver education review before booking your next try. Practically: prepare like the first time was your only try. The HelloDrive course is built around the exact topics on this test in short 5–15 minute chunks, with practice questions you can repeat until you're consistently scoring 90%+ at home.

Don't get discouraged

Failing once doesn't go on any permanent record. Every Ohio adult you know who has a license either passed first try or quietly failed once and came back. You can do this.
