How the test is scored
The Ohio knowledge test is split into two 20-question sections: road signs and Ohio law / safe driving practices. You need 75% (15 out of 20) on each section. If you fail only one section, you only retake that section. If you fail both, you retake both.
Can I retake it the same day?
No. Ohio requires you to wait at least 24 hours before retaking either section of the knowledge test. Most BMV locations recommend coming back a different day so the staff can re-pull your file.
What does a retake cost?

- You don't need to repay the original $23.50 if you're just retaking one section.
- You don't need to retake the vision test if you already passed it.
The fastest way to actually pass next time

How many times can I fail before something bad happens?
There's no hard cap, but Ohio BMV practice is that after about four failed attempts a manager usually steps in to recommend additional studying or another formal driver education review before booking your next try.
