Left Turn on Red in Ohio: The Permit Test Question Everyone Misses

In Ohio you may turn left on red only from a one-way street onto another one-way street, after a complete stop, unless a sign prohibits it. Here's the rule the permit test loves.

"You may make a left turn on a red light only from…" — if you're studying for the Ohio permit test, you've seen this question. The answer: only from a one-way street onto another one-way street, after coming to a complete stop and yielding to pedestrians and traffic, unless a posted sign prohibits the turn.

Why this rule exists

On two one-way streets, a left turn moves with the flow of traffic the same way a right turn on red does on regular roads — you're merging into the nearest lane of a street where every car travels the same direction. Turning left on red anywhere else would send you across oncoming traffic, which is why it's illegal in every other situation.

The checklist before you turn

  1. You're on a one-way street, turning onto another one-way street (moving left).
  2. Come to a complete stop at the line or crosswalk.
  3. Check for a "NO TURN ON RED" sign — if posted, wait for green.
  4. Yield to pedestrians and any cross traffic.
  5. Turn into the nearest available lane.

Common wrong answers

It is NOT legal to turn left on red from a two-way street onto a one-way street, and it's never legal when a sign prohibits it. If the question mentions a two-way street anywhere, the answer is no.

How right turn on red differs

Right on red is allowed from any street after a complete stop, unless a sign says otherwise — same stop-and-yield rules, but no one-way requirement. The permit test likes to test both in the same sitting, so know the difference cold.
