Ohio Adult Driver's Ed, Online

Getting your first Ohio driver's license as an adult? Here's what the BMV actually requires, what we offer, and how to get on the road as quickly as possible.

Adult Driver's Ed in Ohio: The Short Version

Ohio's driver education requirements depend on your age and your residency status. There are three common paths for first-time adult applicants, and the Ohio BMV makes the final determination based on your situation when you visit a deputy registrar.

Adults 18–20

Same 24-hour driver education course as teens, then the BMV knowledge test and road test.

Adults 21+ (U.S. citizens & permanent residents)

Usually able to go straight to BMV testing with an active Temporary Permit. If you fail the maneuverability or road test on your first attempt, Ohio requires the 4-hour Abbreviated Adult course before retesting — available now online at HelloDrive for $65.

Limited Term License / TIPIC applicants

Anyone on a work visa, student visa, asylum, DACA, or other proof of legal presence completes the full 24-hour course regardless of age.

The 4-hour Abbreviated Adult course, $65 — Ohio BMV-approved, required for adults 21+ who failed their first BMV driving test, and great voluntary test prep. Finish it online in an afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do adults have to take driver's ed in Ohio?

It depends on your age and status. Adults 18–20 generally complete the 24-hour course. Adults 21+ with an active Temporary Permit can usually go straight to BMV testing — but if they fail the maneuverability or road test on the first attempt, Ohio requires the 4-hour Abbreviated Adult course (available online at HelloDrive for $65) before retesting. Anyone applying for an Ohio Limited Term License or TIPIC — including individuals on a work visa, student visa, asylum, DACA, or other proof of legal presence — must complete the full 24-hour course regardless of age. Your local Ohio BMV makes the final determination based on the documents you present.

How much does Ohio adult driver's ed cost?

HelloDrive's 24-hour Ohio BMV-approved online course is $75 flat — the same price for teens and adults. The 4-hour Abbreviated Adult course (required after failing your first BMV driving test) is $65. BMV testing fees ($23.50 knowledge test, $46 road test) and the license issuance fee (~$27.25) are separate and paid directly to the BMV.

Is the 24-hour course really 24 hours long?

Yes — Ohio law sets the classroom-instruction requirement at 24 hours, and our course is built to meet it. Ohio also caps online instruction at 4 hours per day, so the course takes a minimum of 6 calendar days. You can split those sessions however you want.

I'm 21+ and on a work visa. Do I really have to do the full 24 hours?

Yes. Ohio requires all Limited Term License and TIPIC applicants — including individuals on work visas, student visas, asylum, DACA, and other proof of legal presence — to complete the full 24-hour driver education course regardless of age. This is a different rule than for U.S. citizens 21+, who are typically eligible for the abbreviated 4-hour course.

How long is HelloDrive's certificate good for?

Your Ohio Online Education Certificate (OEC) does not expire for the purposes of BMV testing. You can take your knowledge test and road test on whatever timeline works for you after finishing the course.

Can I take the course on my phone?

Yes — HelloDrive is mobile-first and works in any modern phone browser. Native iOS and Android apps are coming soon.
