How to Get Your Temps in Ohio: Every Step, Age, and Fee (2026)

Everything you need to get your Ohio temporary permit (TIPIC) in 2026: the age requirements, documents to bring, the 40-question test, fees, and what happens after you pass.

"How do I get my temps?" is the single most common question new Ohio drivers ask — and the answer depends on your age. Here's the complete 2026 process, from the first document you gather to the moment you're legally practicing on the road.

Step 1: Know your age track

  • 15 years, 6 months or older: you can take the knowledge test and get your TIPIC (Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card). Under 18, you'll need the full 24-hour driver education course before your license.
  • 18–20: you can get your TIPIC any time, and Ohio requires anyone under 21 to complete the full 24-hour driver education course before the road test.
  • 21+: TIPIC, practice, then straight to the driving test — no course required unless you fail your first attempt (then the 4-hour course applies) or you're applying for a Limited Term License (24-hour course required at any age).

Step 2: Gather your documents

  • Proof of full legal name and date of birth (birth certificate or valid passport).
  • Social Security number (card or acceptable proof).
  • Two documents proving Ohio residency (bank statement, utility bill, school record — addressed to you or your parent).
  • Under 18: a parent or legal guardian must come along to sign the consent form.

Step 3: Pass the knowledge test

The Ohio knowledge test is 40 questions: 20 on road signs and 20 on traffic laws. You need 75% on each section — not just overall — so you can't ace signs and coast on laws. There's also a quick vision screening. The test is offered at BMV Driver Exam Stations, and many locations let you take it on a walk-in basis.

Study smarter, not longer

Every question comes from the Ohio Digest of Motor Vehicle Laws. If you're taking the 24-hour course with HelloDrive, the course material covers the same laws and signs the test draws from — most students who finish the first units pass the temps test on their first try.

Step 4: Pay and get your TIPIC

The TIPIC packet costs $23.50. Once you pass, you'll get your card and you're legal to drive — with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat. Under 18, that supervising driver must be a parent, guardian, or driving instructor at first.

Step 5: What happens next depends on your age

  • Under 18: complete the 24-hour classroom course (fully online with HelloDrive, $75), 8 hours behind-the-wheel with a licensed instructor, 50 supervised practice hours (10 at night), and hold the TIPIC at least 6 months before the road test.
  • 18–20: complete the 24-hour course, then schedule your road test — no 6-month wait, no 50-hour log.
  • 21+: practice until you're consistent on maneuverability, then schedule the test.

Common temps questions

  • Can I take the knowledge test online? No — the official test is in person at a BMV exam station. Study can be done entirely online.
  • How many times can I retake it? As often as needed; if you fail, you can usually retake it the next business day.
  • Does my TIPIC expire? Yes — it's valid for one year. If it lapses, you retake the knowledge test.
  • Can I drive alone with temps? Never. A licensed driver 21+ must be in the front passenger seat every time.
